February 10th is approaching, the day of remembrance established twenty years ago by the center-right. A day full of meaning for those who believe in the idea of a homeland that leaves no one behind. For too many years, the exiles from Istria and Dalmatia and the victims of the Foibe were considered second-class Italians, children of a lesser God. They left their land, they lost their lives, never denying their Italian-ness. But for political reasons, the left (and not only) has minimized and denied the atrocities committed by the troops of their political father Tito, who was even awarded the highest state honor: a slap in the face of memory. Things are changing, however, and the memory of those Italians (in the words of Giorgia Meloni, “twice Italian: by birth and by choice”) is being strengthened by a right wing that leaves no one behind. An exhibition organized by Fratelli d’Italia and the conservatives of the Ecr, wanted by Stefano Cavedagna, MEP for the FdI, arrives at the European Parliament, beyond the Italian borders. It is he who gives us the coordinates of the event.

Congressman, what is this all about?

“After almost eighty years since the tragedy and massacre of the martyrs of the Foibe and the exodus of Italians from Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia, after twenty years since the Italian Parliament passed the law establishing the Day of Remembrance on February 10th, thanks also to the work of the center-right and the then Berlusconi government, we are finally able to organize for the first time an exhibition dedicated to the martyrs of the Foibe in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. It will be held during the plenary session, from February 10th to 13th, with the inauguration on February 10th, also broadcast by La Voce del Patriota, at 18:00, together with many friends: the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Antonella Sberna, the head of the delegation of Fratelli d’Italia, Carlo Fidanza, the co-president of the European Conservative Group, Nicola Procaccini”.

What will you be able to see in this exhibition?

“I had the honor of organizing this exhibition, which will be made up of 24 panels, starting from the history of these territories, the lands of Istria, Rijeka and Dalmatia, from the great historical presence of Italians in this region, from the first tensions during the Habsburg domination, which unfortunately aggravated tensions with the Slavic world, to the most recent days, when the war unfortunately led to the possibility of Tito’s communist troops conquering territories, imprisoning Italians and causing many of them to exodus.”

In short, it seems that an issue so historically mistreated in the past is getting the attention it deserves..

“Today, finally, we can also condemn communism at the European level, and we can also create a common memory for the peoples of Europe in the face of one of the greatest tragedies our homeland has suffered.”
